Well, it’s here, and I totally forgot about it.
Why? I’ve been playing around with Twitter and all the myriad ways it can impact blogs, websites, social media activities, relationships, and best of all, your business.
What does that have to do with RSS? Plenty, as it turns out.
Some Closing Thoughts on RSS
I sort of see RSS as one of the earlier steps, and Twitter as the next evolutionary step in the journey to fulfill the promise of technology.
Remember that promise? Way back when, we all thought we’d be working 2 days a week by now, that computers would be liberating us from the daily grind. Instead, it seemed for a time there (maybe it still does to you) that the exact opposite has happened. We’ve just expanded to fill the time allotted, or rather our work has.
But now — and I don’t know about you, but it’s true for me — I begin to see a new way to roll here, not just as a web writer and blogger, but as a lawyer, too. Instead of juggling all these roles all at once, I’m starting to envision life and work as one big happy pot of stew simmering on the stove. RSS and Twitter are just two spices in that stew.
RSS feeds can give you news — tailored to your interests, your practice areas, your region, your friends, your favorite sources — all delivered to you. (Just set up your news alerts using something like Google’s personalized home page options.)
RSS feeds can broaden your world’s horizons, bringing you information and contacts (and relationships) from all over the world. (Just add your favorite blogs and sites from all around the globe to your reader, and then follow your favorite bloggers on Twitter; start up conversations and make friends.)
RSS feeds can bring your blog readers and website visitors more information (and value) than you could ever dream of delivering all on your own. (Just incorporate feeds from other useful, relevant, and trustworthy sites into your own blog’s sidebar; use widgets in WordPress for this.)
What can you do with RSS? What do you want to do? Can you begin to imagine a way of living and working that transcends 2.0 this or that? Can you laugh at the notion of “work/life balance” — maybe just a little — and see how the whole notion of balance has been stood on its head? Can you catch the barest glimpse, maybe, of a holistic and whole life, wholly and whole-heartedly lived?
Happy RSS Awareness Day!
