If you’ve been anywhere other than holed up in a cave for the past few weeks, chances are you’ve heard about The Secret, a 90-some minute documentary film on the Law of Attraction, which at its simplest essence holds that what we hold in our thoughts manifests in our life. It seems to be gaining speed and traction, as most good ideas do.
But as with most good ideas, it’s also been unfortunately misinterpreted, misunderstood, and misrepresented. See this clip from the Today show, for but one example. And now, marketing guru Dave Dee thinks he knows “the real ‘secret.’”
Here’s the thing, though: Dave, as many others have, misunderstands what the Law of Attraction is, at its essence. It’s not just happy thoughts, positive thinking, or even affirmations. To manifest success, you have to operate on all three levels – intentions, attentions, and actions. Note that last one! That’s right – you have to act, and that is in fact what The Secret teaches us.
The trick is to make all three consistent, all the time.

Hi, good post and interesting blog!
I’ve just started learning about the law of attraction, from watching The Secret online and reading over at Steve Pavlina’s blog.
Like a lot of lawyers, I fight with the tendency to be cynical, ironic, and negative — pretty much the worst stuff to think about vis a vis the law of attraction.
But to play devil’s advocate, nonetheless: if you are really following through on actions, why would you necessarily need intention or attention? If I run 5 miles every day, aren’t I going to get more fit even if I am not “placing an order with the universe”?
I find that my failures are usually of the discipline and execution variety — on the action front. Can the Law of Attraction help with this?

Hi Eric! Excellent comment – thanks for reading and posting! If you don’t mind, I’ll use this as food for another post, in lieu of responding here in comments. Thanks again – and check back tomorrow for the answer!
