The Couple That Vacations Together …

Mobile Computing At Its Finest

Sterling Okura commented on yesterday’s guest post by Stephanie Kimbro and linked to his own Biz Lift Blog, specifically a post about Traveling & Remote Working As a Couple.

I was so impressed with Sterling’s post that I promised in comments to plug it on the main page today, and I am. There’s something for just about everyone in Sterling’s post, which is all about how he helped his wife Rebecca go mobile with her law practice so they could share their mutual love of travel.

I especially enjoyed the first step Rebecca came up with:

1. Fire your boss

Rebecca left her job to start her own firm.

This step is not necessary in all situations. … For those of you who don’t want to bother with bosses, going self-employed is a great option.

Being solo is a challenge and a blessing, in that the very thing that makes us nimble and responsive also makes us feel understaffed and very, very small. But as Sterling’s post points out, there are ways to use technology to combat that sensation (and, let’s face it — that impression that others sometimes have). Make your practice more responsive and mobile by adopting some of these strategies.

As for my practice, I rely heavily on my Blackjack (I know — a Mac fangirl without an iPhone? Sacrilege! But I’m working on it) to keep me plugged in, and my MacBook to carry my portable office around with me. I’ve heard of estate planning lawyers who carry portable scanners and printers, along with their notarial seals, to do house-calls for will signings.

Share your own portability strategies in the comments below!

Sheryl, thank you so much for featuring the article. I really appreciate your kind support.

I love that you’re a Mac user. I have to confess that I have a Macbook Pro & iMac but use a Sprint Mogul smartphone instead of iPhone. Sacrilege indeed!
